  2. Type: winver
  3. Press Enter
  4. Check version number in dialog

Required: Version 2004 (Build 19041) or higher

Windows Updates

If you’re on an older Windows 10 build, update via Windows Update. MAITO requires modern Windows APIs that weren’t available in older versions.

Windows Editions

Architecture Requirements

x64 (64-bit) Only

Required: x64-based processor with 64-bit Windows

Not Supported: x86 (32-bit) systems

Why x64 Only?

  1. Memory Addressing: AI models need >4GB RAM, impossible on x86
  2. Modern Libraries: ONNX Runtime, DirectML only support x64
  3. Performance: 64-bit processors handle AI workloads much better
  4. Industry Standard: x86 is obsolete (since ~2010)

How to Check

See Windows x64 Requirement article for detailed instructions.

Quick Check:

  1. Right-click “This PC” → Properties
  2. Look for “64-bit operating system, x64-based processor”

Already Have .NET 9.0?: Installer detects and skips

DirectML (for GPU Acceleration)

Required For: DML model variants

Included In: Windows 10 (2004+) and Windows 11

  • Part of DirectX 12
  • No separate installation needed
  • Requires updated GPU drivers

Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables

Usually Pre-installed: Most Windows 10/11 systems already have these

If Missing: MAITO installer includes them

Windows Updates

Recommendation: Keep Windows updated

  • Latest security patches
  • Performance improvements
  • Bug fixes
  • Driver updates

Critical Update: Windows 10 May 2020 Update (19041) minimum

Internet Requirements

For DeepL Translation

Required: Active internet connection

  • Broadband recommended (5+ Mbps)
  • Mobile hotspot works
  • Dial-up too slow (not recommended)

Bandwidth:

  • Text translation: Minimal (<1 MB per 1000 characters)
  • Document translation: Varies by file size

Latency: Lower is better

  • <100ms: Excellent
  • 100-300ms: Good
  • >300ms: Noticeable delays

For Local AI Translation

Required: Only for initial model download

  • One-time download: 2.5GB per model
  • Fast connection recommended (25+ Mbps)
  • Download time:
    • 100 Mbps: ~3 minutes
    • 50 Mbps: ~7 minutes
    • 25 Mbps: ~15 minutes
    • 10 Mbps: ~30 minutes

After Download: No internet needed

  • Translate text, Word and text documents fully offline
  • No bandwidth consumption
  • No latency

One exception: translating a PDF locally activates a third-party conversion component, which contacts its vendor. No document content is sent, and it tolerates being offline for up to seven days at a time. See Privacy and Security.

Firewall and Proxy

DeepL Translation:

  • Must allow HTTPS (port 443) to DeepL servers
  • Proxy support available
  • Corporate firewall may require whitelisting

Model Download:

  • Must allow HTTPS downloads
  • Large file transfer (2.5GB)
  • Some restrictive networks may block

Compatibility Notes

Virtual Machines

Supported: Yes, with caveats

  • VMware, VirtualBox, Hyper-V all work
  • GPU passthrough needed for DML models
  • Performance depends on host hardware
  • RAM allocation critical (8GB+ to VM)

Remote Desktop / RDP

DeepL Translation: Works perfectly

  • No special requirements
  • Normal functionality

Local AI Translation: Limited

  • Can translate via RDP
  • Performance depends on host (not client)
  • GPU acceleration may not work over RDP
  • Use CPU models for RDP scenarios

Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL)

Not Supported: MAITO is a Windows application

  • Does not run in WSL
  • Requires native Windows

Windows on ARM

Not Supported: x64 architecture required

  • ARM-based Windows PCs (Surface Pro X, etc.) not compatible
  • x64 emulation too slow for AI workloads
  • May be supported in future with ARM-native builds

Multi-Monitor Setups

Fully Supported: MAITO works great with multiple monitors

  • DPI-aware (handles different scaling)
  • Remembers window position per monitor
  • Works with mixed DPI setups (100%, 125%, 150%, etc.)

High DPI Displays

MAITO fully supports high DPI displays (4K, 5K, etc.) with proper scaling. No blurry text or oversized elements.
