Why Does MAITO Require Windows x64?

Understand why MAITO only supports 64-bit Windows and how to check if your system is compatible

MAITO requires Windows x64 (64-bit) architecture. Here’s why and how to check your system.

What Is x64?

x64 = 64-bit architecture

x86 = 32-bit architecture (older)

Modern computers use x64, which can:

  • Access more than 4GB of RAM
  • Run more complex software
  • Handle larger datasets
  • Execute AI workloads efficiently

Why x64 Only?

1. Memory Requirements

Local AI translation models need 2-4GB RAM just to load. x86 systems are limited to 4GB total RAM, leaving insufficient space for both Windows and the translation model.

2. Modern AI Libraries

The AI libraries MAITO uses (ONNX Runtime, DirectML) only support x64 architecture. They’re optimized for modern hardware.

3. Performance

64-bit processors handle the mathematical operations required for AI translation much more efficiently than 32-bit processors.

4. Industry Standard

x64 has been the standard since ~2010. x86 systems are increasingly rare and unsupported by modern software.

Most Systems Are x64

If your computer was purchased after 2012, it’s almost certainly x64. x86 systems are very old and increasingly rare.

Checking Your System

Method 1: System Information

  1. Press Windows + Pause/Break key, or
  2. Right-click This PC → Properties
  3. Look for System type:
    • ✅ “64-bit operating system, x64-based processor” = Compatible
    • ❌ “32-bit operating system, x86-based processor” = Not compatible

Method 2: Settings App

  1. Open Settings (Windows + I)
  2. Go to System → About
  3. Check System type field

Method 3: System Information Tool

  1. Press Windows + R
  2. Type: msinfo32
  3. Press Enter
  4. Look for System Type

What If I Have x86?

If your system is x86 (32-bit):

MAITO Won’t Work: x64 is a hard requirement for both DeepL and Local AI translation.

Your Options:

  1. Upgrade to x64 Windows: If your CPU supports x64 (most CPUs since 2006 do)
  2. Consider a New Computer: x86 systems are outdated
  3. Use Alternative Tools: Web-based translation (DeepL website, Google Translate)

Can't Change Hardware

If your CPU itself is x86-only (very old), you cannot upgrade to x64 - you need new hardware. However, most CPUs since 2006 support x64; you may just need to reinstall Windows as 64-bit.

Windows 10/11 Requirement

MAITO also requires:

  • Windows 10.0.19041.0+ (May 2020 Update or later), or
  • Windows 11 (any version)

Older versions of Windows 10 or Windows 7/8 are not supported, but may work, feel free to test.
