Manage Disk Space and Storage

Learn how to free up disk space used by MAITO models, cache, and logs

Pangaia Software 6 min read

MAITO’s local translation models can use significant disk space. This guide shows you how to monitor and manage storage effectively.

Storage Overview

MAITO stores data in: %APPDATA%\Pangaia Software\MAITO\

Storage Breakdown

Models (2-8GB per model)

  • Translation model files (.onnx, .onnx.data)
  • Largest storage consumers
  • Required for local translation

Cache (10-100MB)

  • Temporary translation data
  • Session information
  • Can be safely cleared

Logs (5-50MB)

  • Error logs and diagnostic information
  • Accumulates over time
  • Can be cleared periodically

Configuration (<1MB)

  • Settings and preferences
  • API keys
  • Should not be deleted

Typical Usage

A typical MAITO installation with 2-3 models uses about 5-10GB of disk space total.

Checking Storage Usage

Via Settings

  1. Open SettingsTranslation tab
  2. Select Local On-Device Translation
  3. Scroll to Storage Information section
  4. View the three-segment breakdown:
    • Models: Space used by translation models (blue)
    • Other: Non-MAITO used diskspace (gray)
    • Available: Free space on drive (green)

Via Windows Explorer

Manually check folder sizes:

  1. Press Windows+R
  2. Type: %APPDATA%\Pangaia Software\MAITO
  3. Press Enter
  4. Right-click models folder → Properties
  5. View size on disk

Freeing Up Space

Method 1: Remove Unused Models

The fastest way to free significant space:

  1. Open SettingsTranslationCached Models
  2. Identify models you don’t use
  3. Click Remove next to each unused model
  4. Confirm deletion

Space Freed: 2-8GB per model

Active Model

You cannot remove the currently active model. Switch to a different model first, then remove the old one.

Method 2: Clear Cache

For smaller space savings:

  1. Open SettingsAdvanced tab
  2. Find Cache Management section
  3. Click Clear Cache button
  4. Confirm action
  5. Cache is cleared immediately

Space Freed: 10-100MB

Safe to Clear: Yes, cache regenerates automatically.

Method 3: Delete Old Logs

Manual log cleanup:

  1. Press Windows+R
  2. Type: %APPDATA%\Pangaia Software\MAITO\logs
  3. Press Enter
  4. Sort by date
  5. Delete old log files (keep last 7 days)

Space Freed: 5-50MB

Safe to Delete: Yes, but keep recent logs if troubleshooting issues.

Automatic Log Rotation

MAITO automatically rotates logs, keeping only the most recent files. Manual cleanup is rarely necessary.

Method 4: Uninstall and Reinstall

For a complete fresh start:

  1. Uninstall MAITO via Windows Settings
  2. Manually delete: %APPDATA%\Pangaia Software\MAITO
  3. Reinstall MAITO
  4. Reconfigure settings

Space Freed: Everything (complete reset)

Warning: You’ll lose all settings and need to re-download models.

Model Management Strategies

Minimal Setup (2.5GB)

Keep only what you actively use:

  • 1 model: Rosetta 4B CPU or DML
  • No extras: Remove all other models
  • Clear cache: Regularly clear unused cache

Best For: Systems with limited disk space (<50GB free)

Balance between flexibility and space:

  • 1 model: Rosetta 4B CPU or DML
  • No cleanup necessary: MAITO handles cache

Best For: Most users with moderate disk space (50-200GB free)

Power User Setup (10-20GB)

Maximum flexibility:

  • 4+ models: Try all available models
  • Experiment freely: Download, test, keep favorites
  • Regular benchmarks: Compare performance over time

Best For: Users with ample disk space (200GB+ free) who want to experiment

Low Disk Space Warnings

When Space Is Low

MAITO warns you when:

  • Less than 5GB free: Caution warning
  • Less than 2GB free: Critical warning
  • Insufficient space: Cannot download new models

Automatic Prevention

MAITO prevents issues by:

  • Blocking model downloads when space insufficient
  • Warning before large operations
  • Showing real-time storage status

Critical Low Space

If you have less than 2GB free, you may encounter:

  • Cannot download new models
  • Translation failures on very long texts
  • System performance degradation
  • Windows stability issues

Free up space immediately!

Storage Location

Default Location

By default, MAITO stores everything in:

C:\Users\[YourUsername]\AppData\Local\MAITO\

Cannot Change Location

Currently, MAITO’s storage location cannot be customized. All data must be on the C: drive (or whichever drive contains your user profile).

Workaround for Limited C: Drive:

  • Use Windows Storage Sense to move other apps
  • Move user folders (Documents, Downloads) to other drives
  • Consider using DeepL instead of local translation
  • Upgrade C: drive capacity

Monitoring Disk Usage

Regular Checks

Monitor storage monthly or when:

  • Downloading new models
  • Experiencing performance issues
  • Windows reports low disk space
  • Planning to download large files

Windows Storage Sense

Enable Windows Storage Sense to automatically manage disk space:

  1. Settings → System → Storage
  2. Enable Storage Sense
  3. Configure cleanup frequency
  4. Let Windows manage temporary files

MAITO’s cache can be safely removed by Storage Sense, but models and configuration are protected.

Best Practices

Do’s

Keep 1-2 favorite models you actively use

Remove models after testing if not satisfied

Clear cache every few months

Monitor storage before downloading new models

Keep 10GB+ free for optimal system performance

Delete old logs if troubleshooting complete

Don’ts

Don’t hoard models you never use

Don’t delete config files manually

Don’t ignore warnings about low disk space

Don’t fill drive to less than 5GB free

Don’t delete active model (switch first)

Don’t manually edit model files

Storage Strategy

A good rule of thumb: Keep 2-3 models maximum unless you’re actively comparing. Most users find one preferred model and stick with it.

Troubleshooting

”Insufficient Disk Space” Error

When Downloading Model:

  1. Check available space (need 2x model size temporarily)
  2. Remove unused models first
  3. Clear cache
  4. Try again

During Translation:

  1. Very long texts need temporary storage
  2. Free up 1-2GB space
  3. Translate smaller chunks instead

Cannot Remove Model

Cause: Model is currently active.

Solution:

  1. Download/activate a different model
  2. Then remove the unwanted model

Storage Not Freeing Up

After removing models, if space doesn’t free:

  1. Empty Windows Recycle Bin
  2. Wait a few minutes for Windows to update
  3. Restart MAITO
  4. Restart computer if needed
  5. Check with Windows Explorer to verify

”Other” Storage Very Large

If “Other” storage exceeds 500MB:

  1. Clear cache in Settings
  2. Delete old logs manually
  3. Look for temp files in MAITO folder
  4. Contact support if issue persists
