How Character Counting Works

What Counts

✅ Source text characters (the text you’re translating)

  • Letters: a, b, c, A, B, C
  • Numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3
  • Punctuation: . , ! ? ; :
  • Spaces: ” ” (spaces between words)
  • Special characters: @, #, $, %
  • Line breaks: Counted as characters

What Doesn’t Count

❌ Translation output (doesn’t count toward quota)

❌ Failed translations (no charge if error)

❌ Auto-detection (language detection is free)

Source text: "Hello, how are you today?"
Character count: 27 characters (including spaces and punctuation)

Source Language Matters

DeepL only counts the SOURCE text. If you translate 1,000 characters of English to German and the German output is 1,200 characters, you only pay for the 1,000 source characters!
