How Does Device Assessment Work?

Understand how MAITO analyzes your hardware to recommend the best translation models for your system

Pangaia Software • • 5 min read

When you configure local translation, MAITO performs a device assessment to analyze your hardware and recommend optimal models. Here’s how it works.

What MAITO Analyzes

CPU Detection

  • Processor Model: Intel Core i7-11800H, AMD Ryzen 7 5800H, etc.
  • Generation: Newer CPUs have better AI instructions
  • Cores/Threads: More cores = better performance
  • Clock Speed: Higher GHz = faster processing
  • Special Instructions: AVX2, AVX-512 support for AI workloads

RAM Detection

  • Total RAM: Total installed memory
  • Available RAM: Free memory right now
  • Memory Speed: DDR4-3200, DDR5-4800, etc.
  • Pressure Check: Whether system is memory-constrained

GPU Detection (if available)

  • GPU Vendor: NVIDIA, AMD, Intel
  • GPU Model: RTX 3060, Radeon RX 6700, etc.
  • VRAM Amount: Dedicated video memory
  • DirectML Support: Compatibility with DirectML acceleration
  • Driver Version: Whether drivers are up-to-date

Performance Ratings

MAITO assigns an overall rating based on analysis:

Excellent (16GB+ RAM, Modern CPU, Good GPU)

  • Translation Speed: 15-25+ tokens/sec expected
  • Experience: Smooth, responsive, near-instant
  • Recommendation: Rosetta 4B DML (GPU-accelerated)
  • Suitable For: Heavy translation workloads

Good (8-12GB RAM, Mid-range CPU, Optional GPU)

  • Translation Speed: 8-15 tokens/sec expected
  • Experience: Fast enough for everyday use
  • Recommendation: Rosetta 4B DML (if GPU) or CPU
  • Suitable For: Regular translation needs

Fair (6-8GB RAM, Entry-level CPU)

  • Translation Speed: 5-10 tokens/sec expected
  • Experience: Noticeable wait, but usable
  • Recommendation: Rosetta 4B CPU
  • Suitable For: Occasional translations, short texts

Poor (4-6GB RAM, Older CPU)

  • Translation Speed: 2-5 tokens/sec expected
  • Experience: Slow, considerable wait times
  • Recommendation: Rosetta 4B CPU (smallest footprint)
  • Suitable For: Very light use or consider DeepL

Inadequate (<4GB RAM, Very Old CPU)

  • Translation Speed: <2 tokens/sec expected
  • Experience: Very slow, potentially frustrating
  • Recommendation: Local translation not recommended
  • Suitable For: Use DeepL instead

Ratings Are Estimates

Device assessments are estimates based on typical hardware performance. Actual speed depends on many factors including system load, thermal conditions, and background applications.

Model Recommendations

Based on assessment, MAITO recommends:

CPU-Only Systems

Recommended: Rosetta 4B CPU

  • Optimized for CPU inference
  • Smallest memory footprint
  • Works on any x64 Windows system
  • Best performance without GPU

Systems with Compatible GPU

Recommended: Rosetta 4B DML

  • DirectML GPU acceleration
  • 2-3x faster than CPU version
  • Requires compatible GPU (most modern GPUs)
  • Falls back to CPU if GPU busy

Low-End Systems

Recommended: Rosetta 4B CPU + Reduced Context Window

  • MAITO auto-adjusts memory allocation
  • Prevents system instability
  • May limit very long text translations
  • Still functional for everyday use

Example Assessments

High-End Gaming Laptop

CPU: Intel i9-12900H (14 cores, 5.0 GHz)
RAM: 32GB DDR5-4800
GPU: NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti (16GB VRAM)
Rating: EXCELLENT
Recommended: Rosetta 4B DML
Expected Performance: 20-25 tokens/sec

Standard Business Laptop

CPU: Intel i5-1135G7 (4 cores, 4.2 GHz)
RAM: 16GB DDR4-3200
GPU: Intel Iris Xe (integrated)
Rating: GOOD
Recommended: Rosetta 4B CPU
Expected Performance: 10-12 tokens/sec

Budget Laptop

CPU: Intel i3-1005G1 (2 cores, 3.4 GHz)
RAM: 4GB DDR4-2666
GPU: Intel UHD Graphics (integrated)
Rating: FAIR
Recommended: Rosetta 4B CPU
Expected Performance: 3-5 tokens/sec
Warning: Low RAM may limit performance

Low Memory Warning

If MAITO detects less than 6GB available RAM, it automatically reduces the context window to prevent crashes. This is normal behavior to keep your system stable.

When Assessment Runs

Device assessment happens:

  1. During Onboarding: First-time setup of local translation
  2. In Configuration Wizard: When adding local translation later
  3. In Settings: View assessment anytime in Translation tab

Assessment takes 5-10 seconds and doesn’t require internet.

Understanding the Results

Green Ratings (Excellent/Good)

✅ You’re good to go!

  • Local translation will work well
  • Expected performance acceptable
  • Can translate regularly without frustration

Yellow Rating (Fair)

⚠️ Will work, but slower

  • Usable for occasional translations
  • Short texts translate reasonably fast
  • Long texts may be slow
  • Consider using both Local and DeepL

Red Ratings (Poor/Inadequate)

❌ Not recommended

  • Local AI will be very slow
  • May cause system slowdowns
  • Better to use DeepL
  • Or consider hardware upgrades (add RAM!)

What Assessment Doesn’t Tell You

Device assessment is a snapshot, it doesn’t account for:

  • System Load: Other apps running
  • Thermal State: Whether system is hot
  • Power Mode: Battery vs plugged in (laptops)
  • Background Tasks: Windows updates, antivirus scans

Real performance may vary based on these factors.

Improving Your Rating

If you receive a low rating:

Quick Improvements:

  • Close background applications
  • Restart computer
  • Plug in laptop (full power)

Hardware Upgrades:

  • Add RAM (biggest impact): 8GB → 16GB
  • Update graphics drivers
  • Clean dust for better cooling

Alternative:

  • Use DeepL instead
  • Configure both engines, switch as needed

Both Engines Strategy

Many users with “Fair” or “Poor” ratings configure both engines - use Local AI for quick, private translations and DeepL when speed matters. Local AI can translate documents too, but on a low-rated device expect a long wait: your device rating is exactly what MAITO uses to estimate how long a document will take.
